I’m Not Making This Up, You Know

Daniel E. Walker has suggested that The Star Spangled Banner should be replace as our national anthem with John Lennon’s Imagine. The alleged scholar says that Lennon’s song is “the most beautiful, unifying, all-people, all-backgrounds-together kind of song you could have.”

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do

Yeah, that’ll work for a national anthem.

No, I Can’t See This

The state legislature that once declared pi to be 3 exactly now has a proposal before it to regulate performances of The Star Spangled Banner and fine inappropriate singing of the national anthem. More here.

Folks, I hate to hear the song butchered. I performed the anthem hundreds of times as a member, drum major, and band master of an Army ROTC band, and I know the official DoD arrangement by heart. See below.

OTOH, I don’t believe that every performance has to be the same. For example, I admire Jose Feliciano’s and Jimi Hendrix’s versions. Even Army FM12-50 doesn’t require Army bands to use the DoD chart.

Surely, the Indiana legislature has more important issues to consider.
