NY Politics

popcorn4bkAs we watch Andrew Cuomo’s career being directed to the memory hole, there’s more fun on the horizon. Cuomo killed a sufficient number of senior citizens to cause New York to lose a seat in Congress, and it’s beginning to look as if the state Inner Party will take the opportunity to eliminate AOC’s seat inanition to  gerrymandering as many Republicans as possible into races against a safe Democrats

Meanwhile, AOC is beginning to push the idea of her primarying Chuck Schumer. That offers the intriguing possibility of dragging two competing factions of the national Inner Party into that race.

Stay Tuned.

How Confident Are They?

During last year’s elections, the Democrats managed to get their guy into the White House, just barely flipped control of the Senate, and maintained a slim margin of control of the House. OTOH, they did not do well in state races, and they will not be in control of the reapportionment of House districts coming before the next election. Moreover, many states are reforming their election laws to improve election integrity. 2022 could be a challenging election year for the Democrats.

Looking at the Democrats’ legislative agenda, it appears that they are trying to ram as much of their wish list through as quickly as possible, regardless of the political cost. For example, their pending “infrastructure” bill spends a couple of trillion dollars with less than half going to actual infrastructure projects. The bulk of the bill simply directs government spending into the pockets of favored businesses and not-for-profits.

They’re proposing the biggest tax increase in almost 30 years to pay for their schemes. Now, Joe Xiden was in the Senate in the 1990s, and if his mental faculties were intact, he should remember that tax increases and gun control were what caused the Democrats to lose control of the House in the 1994 midterm elections. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi managed to keep their House seats in ’94, but they should remember that loss and what caused it. So why are they pushing legislation that’s likely to ensure a similar loss in 2022?

It could be that they don’t remember or that they discount the possibility of an electoral backlash because they believe America has changed. They thought that was the case when they rammed Obamacare through on a party line vote, and they lost the House in the next election, but they may think that this time will be different.

Perhaps, but I believe that Xiden (78), Pelosi (81), and Schumer (70) see this Congress as their last chance. They see handwriting on the electoral wall for 2022, and they want to get as much of their agenda passed while they still can.

Whether because of arrogance or desperation, we should expect the Democrats to act recklessly.

Is it 2023 yet?

Why #MeToo Instead of Manslaughter?

New York’s Senators Schumer and Gillibrand have announced that it’s time for Andrew Cuomo to resign. The reason they give is that a handful of the women who the governor may have sexually harassed have come forward with public complaints about his conduct. The Gentle Reader may wonder why the still intact lives a few people are of greater moral weight than thousands of the dead, but that’s not the question the senators are addressing.

Now that the Democrats have control of the White House and Congress, those with the top jobs are working to secure their positions and power bases—and to weaken and neutralize potential competitors. New York Democrats generally supported Cuomo’s handling of the Wuhan Virus Pandemic last year. They are vulnerable to being tagged as accessories or enablers to the granny killing. OTOH, if they can get Cuomo taken out for his personal behavior at times and places where they weren’t present, it may be possible for them to dodge any accountability for their Covid Collusion.

So Cuomo must go, and #MeToo serves the Inner Party’s interest.

They’re Not Gonna Like Their New Rules …

… or at lest, Chuck Schumer won’t if one of those New Rules is enforced against him as it would be enforced against a Deporable.

The Minority Leader made remarks earlier this week that most rational people (and even some Democrats) found to be threats against two Associate Justices of the Supreme Court, Neal Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Based on those remarks, the Second Amendment civil rights organization Gun Owners of America has sent a letter to New York Governor Cuomo seeking a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order (Red Flag Order) against Senator Schumer.

I hate say it, but I’m betting against equal justice under law in this case.

I’m Not Making This Up, You Know

Mexico has been unable or unwilling (or some of each) to enforce its own immigration laws at its southern border, and one result has been a spike in the influx of illegal immigration passing through to the U. S. Donald Trump threatened to use his authority to apply a tariff on Mexican goods unless Mexico began acting responsibly with regard to illegal migration.

At the last minute, Mexico gave Trump what he wanted, and Trump has placed the tariff proposal on hold.

Of course, the senator’s actual prediction was more along the lines of the President caving in to Congressional pressure after Mexico failed to agree to acceptable terms.

Some New Yorkers are better deal makers than others.

Elitist Nonsense

Ann Althouse has a post up looking at Chuck Schumer’s comments about the “tea party elites” who have tricked the masses into following them.

The elite that were around — in high places in government and media — were liberal, and they were challenging the tea partiers. Their key challenge was that these people must be fake, must be following some rich Pied Pipers who were tricking them — which is to say, the masses were following the wrong Pied Piper.
