Many rocket types have been named for mythological characters. United Launch Alliance has named their new launch vehicle the Vulcan Centaur. The upper stage is an upgraded version of the existing Centaur. The first stage in a new design called Vulcan.

Vulcan was the Roman god who limped because his leg never healed properly after it was was broken by a fall into the sea.
