IC 4701 is an emission nebula in the constellation of Sagittarius. It was discovered by the American astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard in 1905. IC 4701 is about twice as wide as the full Moon in the sky. The energetic light from new stars ionizes the hydrogen gas in the nebula, causing it to emit intense red light.
