I stayed up late on Friday night, 31 January, 1958, to watch The Wolfman on Shock Theatre on WSIX-TV. At the end of the movie, the station broadcast news headlines before sing-off. They reported that the Army had launched a satellite. Explorer 1 was America’s first.
65 years later, I’m watching the SpaceX live feed of their Starship using the Superheavy booster.
UPDATE—SpaceX didn’t launch today. They announced a problem with pressurization in the Superheavy first stage and that they will need at least 48 hours to recycle their systems for a new launch attempt.
