Joe Biden and a Baptist Church

The Washington Free Beacon reports that Joe Biden claimed, “I got raised in the black church,” while speaking to a meeting of Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH coalition. The church, Union Baptist Church, was an African-American church in Wilmington. Biden said he was involved with the church when he was involved in organizing anti-segregation protests in the early 1960s. Long-term members of the congregation have expressed their doubts about Biden’s claims.

Of course, Biden’s memory is notoriously creative, and when reporters questioned Biden’s claim in 1987 that he marched in the civil rights movement, he acknowledged that he “wasn’t an activist.” He admitted his most significant experience with civil rights as a youth was when he worked at a majority-black swimming pool as a college sophomore in 1962.
