Democrat Mavericks: A Vanishing Species

John McCain has been praised for being a maverick Republican. Michael Graham has a post over at CBS that asks, “Where are the maverick Democrats?”

The last Democrat who might be considered a maverick was Joe Lieberman. Lieberman, the Democrats’ 2000 VP nominee, was run out of his party by a primary challenge in 2006 and had to run for reelection as an Independent. Lieberman’s “crime” that brought that primary challenge was cooperating on legislation with a Republican—John McCain. Lieberman caucused with the Democrats during his final term in the Senate, but since he retired, … oh, a few red state Democrats vote with the Republican when they have to in order to keep their seats, but, no, there don’t seem to be any more mavericks on that side of the aisle.
