Programming Announcement

Meanwhile, back in the Real World—I’ve been busier than a one-armed paperhanger dealing with engineering for pay and haven’t had time to finish the next Johnny Atsign episode. I should have it done for next week, so stay tuned.

    • It’s funny, but some of the most productive employees I’ve ever had were disabled, in one fashion or another.

For instance, I had a legally blind programmer who would crank out hundreds of lines of astonishingly good C++ code on a daily basis.

When I asked him how he did it, he explained that the objects he was coding just “floated into vision(?)”, and he was just transcribing them, nothing more, using his Braille keyboard.

A remarkable talent. His code rarely required bug fixes, and was praised by his cow-orkers for clarity and preciseness.

    • The best database programmer I ever met was blind. The entire cerebral cortex space that we use for visual image processing, Larry used for databases. Most of us get wonky when we try to extend from three dimensions to four dimensions; Larry envisioned his database designs in seven dimensions.
