  1. Told to me as an anecdote in the early 1980s, by a person who would have been around mainframes for most of the 1970s:

    Back when I started in the late 1970s, before the Internet, and (I believe) before Usenet, there was a special focus on New Zealand for major mainframe suppliers: They would have better-than average software/hardware teams stationed in that country.

    The idea was that, if a time-based issue occurred on NZ machines, the developers would try to diagnose the fault quickly, and devise a patch that could also be released quickly.

    The thinking was that, while it was unlikely to complete the process before Asia/Oceana/Eastern Europe was affected, the hope was that a patch could be ready to be installed before the problematic timestamp hit Western Europe/Africas/Americas/Eastern Pacific machines.
