Those of us who blog using WordPress software usually wind up sending a pingback to other blogs when we link to them. Pingbacks are more that just links. Here’s some of what the WordPress dot org website says about pingbacks.
It is commonly believed that pingbacks do not send any content, as trackbacks do. This is not correct. If you get a pingback, you will see an excerpt from that blog in the Edit Comments section of your dashboard.
There occasionally may be a reason why one might want to link to a blog post without communicating with the linked blogger via a pingback. While the default setting for WordPress software is to enable the sending and receiving of pingbacks, it is possible to create a link without sending one. Simply uncheck the “Attempt to notify …” box in the Settings/Discussion control panel, and no pingback will be sent.
