The seventh and eight brightest stars in the cluster are about the same brightness, so depending on sky conditions you can probably see six, or eight, not seven stars. But seven fit the Greek mythology better and they remain the Seven Sisters to this day.
But not in Japan, where they count six. The system is called Subaru, next time you’re following one on the road look at the company emblem on the back…
This asterism is one of my favorite sights in the winter sky. They’re worth an encore.
