Don’t Know Much About History

Charlie Rangel is being quoted as saying, “Some of them believe that slavery isn’t over, and they think they won the Civil War!” He was referring to Republicans.

The last time I checked, the Union, led by Republican President Abraham Lincoln, did win the Civil War. The Confederacy, led by Democrat Jefferson Davis, lost that war. Also, Republicans in Congress and the state legislatures passed the Thirteenth Amendment banning slavery with little support from Democrats.

UPDATE—Glenn Reynolds suggests that Rangel, being a politician, isn’t ignorant of the the facts; he’s simply lying.

  1. Please don’t confuse him with the facts now! He’ll just call you another racist hillbilly… ugh.

  2. Rangel is either ignorant about history, or he’s a liar. The Republican party was *founded* for the purpose of abolishing slavery, and Abe Lincoln was it’s first nominee. Beyond that, it was the Republicans, led by Illinois Senator Everett Dirkson, who shepherded the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through Congress, over the filibustering by Democrats, such as Al Gore and Robert Byrd.
