Saturn’s Hexagon

ringshexagon_cassini_960This hexagonal cloud formation was originally discovered during the Voyager flybys of Saturn in the 1980s. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the Solar System. The bizarre cloud pattern around the planet’s North Pole is shown above in great detail by this image taken by the Cassini spacecraft. The hexagon is still a stable formation more than 20 years after Voyager. Movies of Saturn’s North Pole show the cloud structure maintaining its hexagonal structure while rotating. The formation is huge. Four Earths could fit inside the hexagon. The dark area in the upper left is Saturn’s shadow eclipsing the rings.
