Channelling Edward R. Murrow

This is no time for men who oppose Senator McCarthy’s Reid’s methods to keep silent, or for those who approve. We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of a republic to abdicate his responsibilities. As a nation we have come into our full inheritance at a tender age. We proclaim ourselves, as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom, wherever it continues to exist in the world, but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.

I wish someone in the MSM had the good sense to go after Harry Reid as effectively as See It Now took on Joseph McCarthy.

UPDATE–Here’s a transcript of the 9 March, 1954, broadcast of See It Now.

UPDATE 2–John Nolte at Breitbart suggests that–GASP!–the MSM might be accessories to Reid’s lying.

If they wanted to, the media could end this McCarthyism by simply doing the right thing and laying this despicable behavior where it belongs — at the feet of President Obama.

But the media won’t here, because it’s all part of the plan.

UPDATE 3–Perhaps there are a few real reporters left. Real Clear Politics reports that when Ed Henry (Fox) and John Karl (ABC) tried to pin down WH press flack Jay Carney on what the President believes about Dingy Harry’s claims concerning Mitt Romney’s taxes, Carney dodged the questions. Video here.

Hmmmm.

Maybe the stink is getting too much for even the Chicagoans in the White House. We’ll see.

Vaporware

Engineers refer to products that are advertised but never delivered as vaporware. Politics is full of the stuff. Think of the Recovery Summer of 2010 or all those green high-tech jobs.

The claims made against Herman Cain are nothing but vaporware so far. After a week, we have nothing concrete to examine. Anita Hill at least had the decency gumption to confront Clarence Thomas.

Cain may be guilty, but of what? Even the charges are undefined. As I posted before, the accusers need to put up or shut up.

Meanwhile, Cain’s allies are beginning to push back effectively with, for example, a pointed political commercial. Ed Morrissey has it embedded in a post at Hot Air.

UPDATE—The National Restaurant Association has waived confidentiality and given permission for Cain’s accuser to speak out. She is declining to do so. Details here.

Notwithstanding the Association’s ongoing policy of maintaining the privacy of all personnel matters, we have advised Mr. Bennett that we are willing to waive the confidentiality of this matter and permit Mr. Bennett’s client to comment. As indicated in Mr. Bennett’s statement, his client prefers not to be further involved with this matter and we will respect her decision.

MSM Reports: 49 < 43

The MSM is reporting that the President has out fundraised all of his Republican rivals combined. If you add up what the Republicans took in, its a bit more than $49 million. (The figures can be found here.) The President collected $43 million.

When I was in the 8th grade, I was in an experimental math class using the School Math Study Group curriculum that morphed into what came to be called New Math. The idea behind the approach was, in the words of Tom Leher, “to understand what you are doing rather than to get the right answer.” But we still learned that 49 is greater than 43.

Nobody Died During Watergate

Bob Owens has an excellent piece on the main stream media’s apparent complicity with the DoJ’s misdeeds relating to gunrunning to Mexican Drug cartels.

When I was working in broadcasting, we viewed our news operation as a check on the government, as one of the things that helped keep it accountable to the people. It looks as if a bunch of the newsies have changed sides.
