MSNBC reports that Jesse Jackson, Jr., is being treated in a Arizona rehab.

UPDATE—The Chicago Tribune reports that Rep. Jackson’s wife denies that he is in a rehab. A statement from an unnamed doctor said that he was being treated for a “mood disorder.”

UPDATE 2—Mood Disorders (according to  the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM IV TR]) include Depressive Disorders, Bipolar Disorders, and Substance Induced Mood Disorders.

A mood disorder can be classified as substance-induced if its etiology can be traced to the direct physiologic effects of a psychoactive drug or other chemical substance, or if the development of the mood disorder occurred contemporaneously with substance intoxication or withdrawal. UPDATE 3—Whatever Rep. Jackson’s illness might be, I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. If his mood disorder is substance-induced and he is being treated in a rehab, then his family and staff are doing him a great disservice by not telling the truth. It’s better to be silent than to lie.
