A Phoenix bureaucrat ordered a woman to stop giving away bottled water in 122 degree heat because she didn’t have a vendor’s permit. Of course, giving, an act of charity, is not vending which means selling.
Dana Crow-Smith was giving the water away as an act of Christian charity. She is threatening to sue the city with help from the Rutherford Institute, a religious civil liberties group, if the city doesn’t apologize and train its enforcement officers to not make the same mistake again. The Rutherford Institute’s letter to the Phoenix City Attorney is here.
